Meditating with Headspace

The word “meditation” sure has a fancy feeling to it, doesn’t it?

I remember doing it as a kid with friends (not realizing it was called meditation) and thinking it was this fun experience where you someone describes something for you to imagine.  I was thrilled to discover it years later as part of my Stress Management curriculum, while getting my degree in Psychology.

I personally think we give too much weight to the word. Most people imagine someone trying to sit cross legged and float in the air. That’s not quite correct.

Meditation doesn’t have to be spiritual, in fact it is literally just thinking about and focusing on the present. That’s it!

Oh, but it is harder than it sounds, especially in the world where we are always increasing productivity and doing 5 things at once.

That’s why I want to introduce you to Headspace, one of my new favorite apps!

I love how this app teaches you how to focus more simply on things, like your breath. Did you know that practicing deep breathing can pretty much improve your whole life? I’m not being dramatic, deep breathing is proven to increase endorphins (which is awesome!), lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve blood flow, relax your muscles, improve your sleep quality, give you more energy, and make you more aware of your muscles when you work out.

In other words, practice deep breathing often. Headspace helps you get started so it becomes a new healthy habit. Enjoy!
